Fans Debate: LSU vs Alabama
01.04.12 - Posted By: SpiffyGuitarMan and The Top Fan
The main event is Monday night from New Orleans. Here, a couple of folks debate the points of the LSU-Alabama game. One represents a Bama point of view. The other tells why LSU will win. In a couple of days, we will know the truth and our 2012 national champion....

Michigan and Notre Dame played one of the most exciting fourth quarters in college football history Saturday night from the Big House. In front of an NCAA record 114,804 fans, the Wolverines scored 28 points in the final period to pull off the amazing 35-31 victory, capped off by quarterback Denard Robinson's 16-yard touchdown toss in the final seconds. In all, 21 points were scored in the last 72 seconds...ALSO, South Carolina defeated Georgia thanks to several big plays from a surprising source.

After the most dramatic offseason in recent memory, the college football season returns. Just like every year, most teams have high aspirations, though only two will ultimately have the honor of playing for the top spot. As we survey the landscape of new conference line-ups, resurgences of old powers, and look for the needle in the haystack that is this year’s dark horse, I present to you a list of teams with many differences but one thing in common – something to prove. For each team on this list, I want them to show me something, and prove once and for all they really belong in the upper echelon of college football.
2011 Preseason Top 25

Auburn will start the year on top as they are the defending champs. Just behind Auburn is their in-state rival, Alabama. LSU is also in the top five. In total, eight of the teams in my preseason top 25 reside in the Southeastern Conference. With the streak of national championships the SEC has going, it is hard not to pick them highly going into 2011...It is time for someone else to step up and take the crystal football! Who will it be?
1. Auburn Tigers - SEC West - Head Coach: Gene Chizik (22-5 at Auburn) - I start off every season by having the defending champion number one in my top 25. Until they lose, they are the champ. And it isn't like Auburn has a bunch of slouches on their 2011 version just because Cam Newton and Nick Fairley now play on Sunday. This school recruits in the top 10 annually, and new guys can't wait to show what they've got. Do not be the least bit surprised if Auburn challenges for the SEC West crown once again this season. Taking over for Newton is Barrett Trotter, a junior, who we know very little about. He has nine career passing attempts. But the Auburn
No Sunshine

Tigers and Gamecocks fall to teams from the Sunshine State to close out 2010. Clemson and South Carolina had different types of seasons this year. USC won its first SEC division championship and was nationally ranked for most of the campaign. Clemson finished fifth in its division and never reached the rankings. The vibe around the Palmetto State was that Carolina had a good year, while Clemson had a bad year, and this was proven on the Death Valley field to the tune of a 29-7 Gamecock win in November. Yes, between the two, this year went to the boys from Columbia. But yesterday, these two teams were on equal footing as they both lost bowl games to teams from Florida.
It's Oregon. It's Auburn. It's On!

Auburn to play Oregon for the national title. For the better half of the season now, these two teams have been ranked 1-2 in all of the major polls. In my mind, as well, these are the top two deserving teams in the nation. Finally - and I do mean finally - the BCS has presented us with a game that will make us feel like we have a true national champion. But even with this great matchup ahead, there is the potential for 2010 to have an eternal asterisk. The unbeaten TCU Horned Frogs will almost certainly get a crack at one of the big-boys, Wisconsin, in a BCS game of their own. Win that one, and the BCS is once again exposed....
A Day to Remember!

The college football world is treated to a special day. It almost felt like New Year's Day Friday as I flipped channels watching multiple college football games. Early in the day, West Virginia announced that they were back in the BCS picture by whipping Pitt in the Big East. Midday we saw Nebraska beat Colorado to wrap up the Big 12 North. Also midday we saw Auburn come back from the dead to beat Alabama, thus staying alive for a national title. And last night, things really got crazy as Boise State lost for the first time all year, and Oregon needed a huge second half to beat Arizona at home....

#2 Auburn at #11 Alabama - 2:30 EST - CBS - Throw out the records and tear up the stat sheets, my friends. We have a barn burner in Tuscaloosa as the 11th ranked Tide play host to undefeated and #2 Auburn Tigers. You better believe it doesn't take any extra hype to convey the importance of this game. Auburn looks to finish it's second undefeated season of the decade and this time parlay that into their first trip to the BCS National Championship. The Tide, coming off their first BCS Championship, looked to repeat, but have now been relegated to the spoiler role. No matter, though. It was in the same position a year ago headed to Atlanta against favorite Florida and walked away to a 32-13 beat down of the Gators. Surely this game won't be that wide open in either direction, but it certainly has the makings of one of the all-time greats. It was 1994 when these teams last met with such high expectations, when both teams were undefeated and played to a 21-14 Alabama win in Birmingham. Get your game faces on; it's gonna be war.
