A Trip Down Memory Lane

10.01.11 - Posted By: Wes Mewbourne - Birmingham, AL

This morning, as I was preparing for work, I heard on my local sports talk station Jay Barker and Antonio Langham – former Alabama Crimson Tide players – reminisce on the inaugural SEC Championship game of 1992.  That game featured eventual national champion Alabama facing off against a tough Florida team.  It also, for me, was an introduction to college football as a whole.  But more than anything else that year marked the beginning of nearly two decades in what would become one of the most important and underrated rivalries in the Southeastern Conference.  As the former players recalled the days of yore, I also found myself drifting back to that year…

Ten Things, Iron Bowl Preview

11.25.10 - Posted By: Wes Mewbourne - Birmingham, AL

#2 Auburn at #11 Alabama - 2:30 EST - CBS - Throw out the records and tear up the stat sheets, my friends.  We have a barn burner in Tuscaloosa as the 11th ranked Tide play host to undefeated and #2 Auburn Tigers.  You better believe it doesn't take any extra hype to convey the importance of this game.  Auburn looks to finish it's second undefeated season of the decade and this time parlay that into their first trip to the BCS National Championship.  The Tide, coming off their first BCS Championship, looked to repeat, but have now been relegated to the spoiler role.  No matter, though.  It was in the same position a year ago headed to Atlanta against favorite Florida and walked away to a 32-13 beat down of the Gators.  Surely this game won't be that wide open in either direction, but  it certainly has the makings of one of the all-time greats.  It was 1994 when these teams last met with such high expectations, when both teams were undefeated and played to a 21-14 Alabama win in Birmingham.  Get your game faces on; it's gonna be war.

Ten Things from Week Five

10.04.10 - Posted By: Brett Haynes and Wes Mewbourne

Our friend, Wes, had a crazy past weekend, so I thought I was filling in for him in our "Ten Things" weekly article. Turns out he wrote one himself after all, so fans, this week you get a double version! The college football world can bring bliss and heartbreak, and with that, here are ten observations from this past weekend of play...

1. Tennessee loses gut-wrencher at LSU. On a goal-line, 4th-down play with just seconds to go, LSU and Tennessee were both substituting players all over the place. After it appeared ...

Week Two Predictions

09.09.10 - Posted By: Brett Haynes - Greenville, SC

Last week I went 14-1 in our Pick'em Contest. In order to keep that kind of record going this week I will have to think hard and dig deep. In my opinion, this week's games are much trickier and harder to pick than those of the opening weekend. Some folks are calling this the biggest weekend of college football in years, with as many as six big-time, nationally important high-profile games set to go down. Yes, if you love college football, week two of the 2010 season is what it's all about! Here are my predictions for this week's games.

10 Things, Preseason

09.02.10 - Posted By: Wes Mewbourne - Birmingham, AL

This year, I've decided to change it up a bit.  Instead of the SEC Rundown, every Tuesday I'll have the top ten games, players, and story lines from the previous weekend in all of college football - not just the SEC.  Feel free to voice all comments, suggestions, etc because that's what it's all about.  Without further ado, I present you the preseason edition, which gives the top ten story lines to watch this season.  Enjoy...

1. Will the champs repeat?

Ever since the Tide held up their first BCS trophy, and their first national title in 17 years, the Bama Nation and football fans across the country wanted to know the same thing – will they do it again?  It’s asked every year, but in actuality, there has

The Reason

08.18.10 - Posted By: Brett Haynes - Greenville, SC

Unless your favorite team is a member of the Southeastern Conference, chances are you are sick and tired of hearing about how great it is. Yes, there is certainly no shortage of media praise for the league that spans the Southern states. But it is mostly deserved. The SEC lays claim to the last four national championships, and seven of the last 14. On top of that, they bost a long list of out-of-conference wins over the last five years. Nothing lasts forever, but as of right now, this league is king. Here is the reason.
