Common Sense wrote on February 21, 2010 at 7:21 PM Canada vs. USA coming up in just a few minutes. Got your Molson Ice ready? I been crunk about this match up all weekend!
And by the way, I'm down with the USA and all of that, heck I live here, but my personal favorite hockey nation is also on the schedule for tonight. That is team Sweden. So many Swedish players end up on my favorite NHL roster, I have always had no choice but to cheer for Sweden. Got pissed off when I got a hole torn in my Sweden national team hockey jersey. Tonight is going to be a brutal one, as they are matched against Finland.
Its going to be a good night of hockey. I'm guessing that Barry Melrose has a face full of chicken poop right about now. |

Common Sense wrote on February 22, 2010 at 10:52 AM As unbelievable as it may sound, I do believe that we might be getting ready to see Marty Brodeur get replaced. It worked for Canada in Salt Lake City by making the goalie change, and they may as well try it now.
Don't get me wrong, this US team is lightning fast, talented, and hungry as ever. But there wasn't much excuse for Brodeur laying down as much as he was. Especially in the first 2 periods of play. I can't remember the last time I seen Brodeur perform like that on a international stage. It may be Roberto Luongo time for the Canadians.
As for the USA team, they are looking pretty nice so far. Haven't lost a game yet in Vancouver. Mostly thanks to my boy, Brian Rafalski. He has had a stretch in these Olympics where he has scored 4 straight goals for the USA. Beastly.

Throw-Them-BoNes wrote on February 22, 2010 at 1:45 PM After yesterday's games the US gets the #1 seed. This puts them in the best spot they could have hoped for.
As you can see the bottom is full of quality teams. Russia, Canada, Sweden, etc. The top bracket is no slouch but much easier and on top of that if the US can take care of business, we will only have to face 1 of those bottom teams. They dodged 5 of the big 7 (Teams made up of mostly NHL players, with us being 1). So Canada and Russia are going to have to duke it out to advance then have to play another game. One of them won't get a medal at all and there is a chance both won't make it although I doubt that. Link: Bracket
We got an unreal draw. The Fins and Czechs are solid but are both a notch below Sweden, Russia and Canada.

Waiting right now to see who will get crushed by Sweden. Slovakia or Norway?

Common Sense wrote on February 24, 2010 at 8:54 PM How embarrassing is this for the Russians? Down 7-2 with 8:22 left to go in the 2nd period. The Russian defensemen have been playing so half-hearted. Its almost as if this game has been one huge power play for Canada.
Update: 7-3 as Sergei Gonchar just slapped one in.
I haven't really understood the play of Ovechkin in any of these games. He has been very quiet, due to that it looks like he is confused on plays. He has been moving himself out of plays and just nowhere to be found.

That was a great song by Cracker, by the way. (ie, Eurotrash Girl)

Common Sense wrote on February 25, 2010 at 7:28 PM Yeah, I heard when he said that. He said it with some authority too. LOL. He meant what he said. His colleagues didn't really help his case too much either by acting so shocked and saying stuff like, "Did you really just say that????"
I dunno though man. I don't really have a side on if people should feel offended by it or not, being that I'm not European. I see both sides though. If he was in fact refering to trance music, then I don't see a problem. Some refer to street ballers as those who play a hip-hop style of basketball.
However, I do think that he is stupid for saying it anyway. He knew good and well that what he said could possibly been interpreted by people as him calling Europeans trash. Hence, "Eurotrash". He disregarded that and said it anyway. He walked a fine line when he said that. And like I said at first, it was the tone of the way he said it that ultimately hurt him. I'll just put it like like this... he should have learned from Don Imus.

Common Sense wrote on February 25, 2010 at 8:49 PM The Gold Medal match in the Women's tournament is now final. The USA fell just short of gold, losing to Canada 2-0. These teams were extremely well matched. The difference was the 2 Canadian goals being so early in the match. After that was a battle of two well matched teams with 2 superior goalies.
So the women's ice hockey medal ceremony is about to look like this:
Gold Medal - Canada
Silver Medal - United States
Bronze Medal - Finland |

cooperwvu wrote on February 25, 2010 at 8:59 PM I guess I didn't look at it from the European trash name-calling aspect. Really, I was thinking of Cracker and that song. I guess it would be like calling someone white trash or something along those lines of labelling without need/reason/cause. I'm sure there was a more approprate choice of words for the Russian performance on the ice...like, "It sucked." Of course, then that might offend those who aren't fond of fellatio.
I've never heard of the guy before last night, but apparently from the article I read, he's said "interesting" things before. I'll bet they keep him around just because of his controversial nature (ie, ratings).

Throw-Them-BoNes wrote on February 28, 2010 at 6:25 AM USA vs Canada - Gold Medal Game Preview02.28.10 - Posted By: Josh Morse - Kearney, NEWe meet again: USA tries for gold against Canada. Gold Medal Game: USA vs. Canada - Canada Hockey Place When this 2010 Men's Olympic Hockey tournament started, not many had the USA still playing Sunday in the gold-medal game (3 p.m. ET, NBC), but almost everyone expected Canada to be playing for a chance to be the first home team since the 1980 Miracle On Ice USA team to win on home soil in Vancouver. The 1960 USA squad is the only other team accomplish the feat, winning gold in Squaw Valley. But here we are with a rematch of the 2002 gold medal match that Canada won 5-2 on US soil at Salt Lake City. USA has a chance to avenge that loss and Canada has a chance to do the same for their 5-3 loss to the United States just a week ago. Only 7 minutes into the third period of the Canada vs. Slovakia semi-final on friday night, the home crowd chanted "We want U-S-A" and they got what they wished for, it's a Canada vs. USA gold medal game. Brian Burke said that "A gold medal immortalizes your team," and he's right, no matter which team wins today, they will be remembered. Americans want a "Miracle" and Canadians expect nothing but gold, tough stakes there for either team. Both teams will most likely have the same game plan coming in to this game with both teams to coming out hard in the first 10 minutes to set the tone for the rest of the game. The first goal scored may end up being the most important one. Depending on what happens after the first 10 minutes we may see both teams tighten up and play a more responsible game. Team USA brings on two things to todays game: an excellent goaltender and speed in their young players. Brian Burke has been saying that his team was the underdog coming into the tournament icing the youngest team, but can you really consider them the underdogs today? They have won all their games, already beaten the Canadians and thumped the Finns in the semi's to advance to this game. The US have gotten better, especially now so that Patrick Kane scored 2 goals in the last game. Team USA will be home team in the game, so they will have the advantage of last change. They will also have an edge with regards to having the same start time throughout the games with today's game starting at 12pm. As many hockey players a creatures of habit, being adjusted to eating breakfast before the game for the last 2 weeks may help the Americans. Sidney Crosby has had a quiet games so far, but even if his effort doesn't show up on the score sheet, you can see that he's doing his part. His line with Staal and Iginla will draw the top defensive pairings to try shut them down. The good thing about Canada is that they don't have just one great line, they have four. They have had scoring come from their Sharks line of Heatley, Thornton and Marleau or from their line of Getzlaf, Perry and Morrow. And their line of Toews, Nash and Richards have been shutting down top lines as well as contributing the odd goal. Team Canada will be the away team, so expect Babcock to try to matchup the defensive pairing of Niedermayer and Weber against the Parise line of the USA. In the Olympics having a great goaltender in net who is hot can be the key to winning. If Ryan Miller can win tonight's game with a hot goaltending performance he is poised to become a household name in the US. At the other end of the rink, Roberto Luongo looks to cement his place in Canadian hockey history. A win tonight will silence the Luongo critics (and he has many of them) and prove that he is an elite goaltender. Besides Miller, the X-factors for the US may well be three forwards that until Friday have not taken advantage of their skill and speed. Phil Kessel (1 goal, 1 assist), Patrick Kane (3 goals) and Paul Stastny (1 goal, 2 assists) need to be huge for USA and show why they are some of the most talented in the world. Kessel did a great job creating the first USA goal with his speed and forcing Miikka Kiprusoff to come out and play the puck, subsequently making an errant clear to Malone who buried it into the vacant net behind Kiprusoff. USA will need more of that on Sunday. They will also need Kane to be the sniper he was Friday against what promises to be a more focused goalie in Luongo and Stastny to be the playmaker he was in the semifinal. Those two points Friday were Stastny's first of the tournament. He needs to finish off strong. This trio was critical to the 6-1 win Friday and they will be critical to the success of their team Sunday. Another key element to keep an eye on will be how USA handles trailing if they fall behind. They have not trailed the entire tournament. If their composure and calmness so far is there, that shouldn't be a problem. The hometown advantage of the crowd will obviously go to Canada today shouting "Go Canada Go" and cheers of "Louuuuuuu" every time Luongo makes a save. But Team USA had the home crowd when they played in Salt Lake City in 2002, and they ended up losing to Team Canada. The Americans would love to do the same to Team Canada this afternoon. Prediction: USA 4, Canada 2 U-S-A! U-S-A! |

As much as I would love to see Team USA get this done, I just get the feeling it may be too tall of a task to defeat such a talented team twice in one Olympics. If they win this one, then this will indeed be a true Miracle on Ice. But I dont know.
* Home ice
* Revenge Factor
* Damn good
* Tough to upset a better team twice in such a short span
Dont get me wrong folks, I will be screaming at my TV for the Americans to get this done, I just dont know if it is a possible feat!

Don't look at me, I don't even have a passport. Crosby says that it happens all the time, and that normally it shows back up eventually. I highly doubt it this time. If he wants to get his equipment back this time around, then he better get himself an Ebay account. |

Common Sense wrote on March 13, 2010 at 10:58 PM Sidney Crosby was right after all. His equipment used in the Gold Medal game were in fact, not stolen. They were simply misplaced, and have been found.
Now here is the weird part. The puck that Crosby shot into the net to win the game has also been found. Found? How was it lost in the first place, you ask? Nobody seems to know. After the puck went into the net, and the celebration was on, one of the linesmen retrieved the puck and took it to the official's box. Apparently, nobody knows what happened to the puck after that.
So since nobody knows how it was lost, then how was it found? The International Ice Hockey Federation says that "someone" called them and said that they had the puck. "Someone"? Does this someone have a name?
And why are we being so secretive, anyway? Well, the I.I.H.F. answers that question by saying, and I quote, "We have our reasons for not giving out the story of how we got the puck".
OK then. Say no more. |
