TP2K10

OK, this is going to be a little different than last year's game. Quite a bit actually. It's the same basic idea as the classic game it's just the way the categories and questions are ordered is somewhat different. This edition combines three previous editions of Trivial Pursuit; 'Totally '80s', '90s', and 'Pop Culture'. Allright, now pay attention (Spiffy), because I don't like repeating myself.

Because there are three main categories, 80s, 90s, etc. the sub-categories for each of the question colors will be different. For example; in the 90s category the color purple has questions to do with trends (of the nineties I assume) while the purple color in the 80s category is concerned with music. Simple right?

Now, when you (I) roll I will be rolling two dice, one is the standard die to determine the number of spaces you will move, and the second determines the category the questions will come from.

One of the most time consuming things we ran into last year was me having to ask what color a player wanted to be moved to after I had rolled. I simply don't see anyway around this. It wouldn't be fair for me to pick randomly what category the question came from. As the game wears on and a person accumulates more pies though the direction a player would move strategically becomes pretty obvious. If this is the case I wont bother to ask and just move you to the color makes the most sense, game play wise.

Also, last year there wasn't a 'clock', this years there will be one. Each team will have 48 hours from the time a question is posted to submit an answer. Now this isn't hard and fast or anything, if you need to check with your teammate and he's gone for the weekend or something, it's fine, just let me know you're alive and why you're waiting. If you and your teammate(s) want to talk it out, by all means, like I said just try to keep things moving. Along the same lines, if neither of you have any clue at all, take a stab and move on, by the same token if it's a painfully easy question and you're the first of your team to read it, just answer it. I doubt anyone will feel slighted if you didn't check with them first to make sure Washington DC is the capital of the U.S.

Another thing, I could care less if you just throw answers out there to see what your teammate thinks, but do me a favor and put something to the effect of 'final answer' when it's the one you want to go with. Several times last year I was left wondering if a particular person was actually answering a question or just talking out loud. Trust me, it's little things like this that can slow things up quite a bit.

Let's see, what else? Talking out of turn is fine, encouraged actually. Bitching and complaining about the decisions of the Comish (me), while generally ignored, also encouraged.

So here's what the board looks like:

Here are the teams as of right now:

WaaarEaGle and DetroitGirl - Blue
TCU Opster - Red
Rockstars (Spiff and Coop) - Purple
Cody - Yellow
Pilot and TopFan - Orange
joepatime - Green

I understand that these aren't exactly 'teams' but I have today and tomorrow off for sure and just want to get it up and going. The hope is that we'll get more people showing up and we will fill the teams out as we get more on board. DetroitGirl I know you have alot going on and said that you could only play on a couple of nights a week, but really all you have to do is check the thread occasionally and chime in, in other words you don't have to commit a couple of hours to sit down and play...this thing takes months to finish.

Awright. Some quick housekeeping:

Now obviously anyone could look up the answer to any question so we operate under the honor system, and will continue to do so.

We will all start in the middle of course. To start the game, you can go down any axle you chose. Once you are on the bottom ring, that's where you're staying going in either clockwise or ccw direction until you fill your pie. (i.e. - there will be no going up and coming back down or 'cutting' through the middle, until you fill your pie and are going for the win. At THAT point you CAN jump back and forth accross the middle space, attempting to land on it.)

If going in either of these directions your piece should land on 'roll again' your piece will just move to the next square going in that same direction. This is done to speed up play. Now while you don't land on a 'roll again' those spots do count as spaces as you are moving.

When you land on square at the bottom of one of the axles (for the pie) you will remain there until you get it right. This comes from last year and really helps to speed things up.

Once your pie is filled and you land on the middle space for the game winner, the category will be decided by a roll of the black die (it's the one with the categories on it) and then a group vote of which sub-category. A vote minus myself and whoever is going to get the question. I'm doing this to avoid any one thinking I examined the card(s) and was simply picking the hardest question. Not that I would but this way there's no misunderstandings. There will be a 24 hour time limit on the vote, if noone votes in that time I'll roll the die to decide the color.

Challenges. You can challenge any question/answer you want (being reasonable) and I will look it up and see if there's not a mistake. Hopefully this won't be as big of an issue as last year's games as this edition isn't nearly as dated. Hopefully. And, like it or not, all decisions from the booth are final.

Finally, I don't consider myself the pope of this dump or anything so anything else that comes up, majority rules worked last time, and I assume it will again.

So, here are the categories and sub-categories:

80s:
Blue - Television
Red - Wild Card
Yellow - Headlines
Purple - Music
Green - Movies
Orange - Sports and Leisure

90s
Blue - Viewing (tv I'd assume)
Red - Oops (no clue)
Yellow - Important (news I'm guessing)
Purple - Trends
Green - Hangin' (leisure?)
Orange - Wired

Pop Culture
Blue - Television
Red - Fads
Yellow - Buzz (no clue)
Purple - Music
Green - Movies
Orange - Sports and Games

No, that was Deep Blue.  And according to Wikipedia...

"Deep Blue was a chess-playing computer developed by IBM. On May 11, 1997, the machine won a six-game match by two wins to one with three draws against world champion Garry Kasparov.[1] Kasparov accused IBM of cheating and demanded a rematch, but IBM refused and dismantled Deep Blue.[2] Kasparov had beaten a previous version of Deep Blue in 1996."

Deep Thought was a computer designed to play chess. Deep Thought was initially developed at Carnegie Mellon University and later at IBM.[1] It was second in the line of chess computers developed by Feng-hsiung Hsu, starting with ChipTest and culminating in Deep Blue. Deep Thought was easily defeated in both games of a two-game match with Garry Kasparov in 1989 as well as in a correspondence match with Michael Valvo.

It was named after Deep Thought, a fictional computer in Douglas Adams' series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The naming of chess computers has continued in this vein with Deep Blue, Deep Fritz, Deep Junior, etc.

Deep Thought won the North American Computer Chess Championship in 1988 and the World Computer Chess Championship in the year 1989, and its rating, according to the USCF was 2551.[2] In 1994, Deep Thought 2 won the North American Computer Chess Championship for the fifth time, with its rating estimated at around 2600. It was sponsored by IBM. Some engineers who designed Deep Thought also worked in the design of Deep Thought 2. Its algorithms were quite simple evaluation functions, but it could examine half a billion chess positions per move in tournament games, which is sufficient to reach depth of 10 or 11 moves ahead in complex positions. Despite that, using the technique of singular extensions it could also follow lines of forced moves that reach even further, which is how it once found a checkmate in 37 moves.[citation needed

With all the relationship advise and herb jokes, I somehow missed the new question.  Not that it matters, because I don't know the answer.  DG, as usual, need you here.  In the 90s, my thought is eastern europe.  Can't keep all the names straight, though.  Czech Republic and Slovakia or Slovenia or whatever Yugoslovia became.  I think Bosnia might be in there somewhere.  Not sure if this helps or hurts, DG, but that's all I got.

Anyone want to rent a condo in SanFranciso? I am unfortunately moving back to Michigan in a few weeks and don't want to buy out my lease. My dad had a stroke and my step mom can't take care of him at home alone. So I am heading back after my two weeks notice is done. Eagle I won't be on for a bit. I have a lot to do before heading to Michigan.
